Phase 5: Techniques · Lesson 3 of 4
How does restraint work as a beginner?
Restraint at its most basic is any agreed limitation on movement. This may be as simple as "keep your hands above your head" — a positional agreement with no physical implements at all. Beginners often assume restraint requires equipment. It does not. The psychological element — the agreed limitation — is often more significant than the physical one.
Starting without implements
Positional restraint — agreeing to stay in a position, or to keep hands in a specific place — gives both people access to the dynamic without any equipment, knots or implements. It is a legitimate and often highly effective starting point.
When you introduce physical restraint
Soft restraints (cuffs with quick-release, purpose-made ties) are the appropriate beginner tool if physical restraint is being introduced. Never use improvised rope without learning proper technique. Keep safety scissors nearby. Never leave a restrained person alone. Agree the safeword or signal before beginning.
Key points
- ✓Restraint can begin as an agreed position — no implements required.
- ✓The psychological element of agreed limitation is often more significant than the physical one.
- ✓Use purpose-made, quick-release soft restraints if introducing physical restraint.
- ✓Safety scissors should always be accessible when physical restraint is used.
- ✓Always agree the safeword or physical signal before beginning any restraint scene.
Try this
- 1.Try positional restraint — agree a position and hold it. No implements required. Notice what the simple agreement produces.
